An unusual musical evening set to unfold at Forum Mall on Sunday July 16
Sudeep, a class 8 student from B M High School Mangalore maybe underprivleged in the material sense of the word, but his eyes and his voice will captivate you when you see him sing at an upcoming event called ‘Beat2Beat’, on Sunday the 16th of July at the Forum Fiza Mall, Mangaluru. Beat2Beat is an unusual musical evening, where talented teams trained by ‘Music for Change’ , a Mangalurean NGO will contest against each other to demonstrate their talent, provide a stage to those who rarely get a chance and provide awareness that Music knows no bounds and can actually cross all barriers - Social, economic, mental and emotional - to bring about change.
'Music for change' is an NGO that that helps children, especially physically disabled, specially-able and economically backward children, through the art of music and dance. From free instruments to classes in piano/guitar/drums/vocal training as well as various forms of dance, it inspires young kids to express themselves better, work as a team and simply cherish the joys of music and dance.
At 'Beat2Beat' Teachers and students will team up to perform together and showcase how well they’ve been doing making an impact. And amongst the wonderful teams that are preparing to battle out the musical evening, here is one that is as adorable as a team can get! Sudeep & Beverly with Joel to back them up on the Keyboards.
Sudeep who sings like a pro is basically from Haveri. This little boy has been studying in Mangalore and is one of the beneficiaries of an initiative by ‘Music for change', A proud son of Mahadev and Indiramma who raise the boy with limited resources but unfettered ambitions, is all set to take the audience by storm at Beat2Beat!
Teaming up with the promising little one are two equally zestful teachers who are taking time from their day-to-day schedule to do a good thing through ‘Music for Change.’ Beverly and Joel, a singer and keyboard player respectively, find it pretty hard to express their sense of accomplishment in teaming up with Sudeep. Beverly is a student of MSc from St.Agnes who is a part of the NGO and teaches music to kids. She says that she is glad she took this up, for it makes her happy to be making an impact beyond what a person could normally do in his everyday life.

Joel, an engineer by profession, also commends the approach employed by ‘Music for Change’ to make impacts. He says that most NGOs focus on impacting students through academic enhancements, while Music for Change has chosen music and dance to make students more enthusiastic towards positive growth. Joel and Beverly are excited, as well as confident that their team where Sudeep is the star, shall be amongst the best teams at Beat2Beat.
About Music for Change
We have all heard of Ed Sheeran, the musical genius who changed the shape of you, me and the world, with his music! He is an inpsiration to many, none less than two young men who set out on a journey to make the world believe that music and dance are 'means of expression' and not something you indulge in at weddings, before heading back to the 'real world'. It wasn’t easy, but they kept going despite obstacles, closed doors and rejections, until one day their persistence gave birth to "Music for Change".
Inseparable childhood buds Ashish Jason Palanna, a musician/singer and Arjun John Dsouza, a marketing executive/music enthusiast, happened to visit a Blind School when the principal spoke about their students wanting to learn music, but not being able to do so because of the lack of equipments and finance for teachers. This visit made both of them evaluate the lives they had been leading up until then.
They realized that between concerts and reality shows, music had become more a hobby for the 'privileged', than a mode of expression and learning. So, with the aim of creating a platform for these talented but underprivileged children they decided to start ‘Music for Change’.
With no money, instruments or teachers, they knocked on doors for funding, old instruments and support. They also decided to use their talents to raise funds with a concert featuring Ashish's band ROL, India's Got Talent semi-finalists and Frictions Dance Crew. The event was a huge success with tremendous response and funding to start classes.
They started with classes at Roman and Catherine School for the Blind and Chethana Child Development Centre. The school administration which was skeptical at first, started recording students’ progress and saw that they showed immense improvement in their academic skills as well. Within a year, several other schools reached out to them, while the determined young men with the help and insight of their administrator and friend, Leona Aranha, reached out to the rest.
It started out with 12 students between two schools and after just a year, it reached a total of over 50 physically challenged, specially-able and economically backward children over 4 schools including Mannagudda Government School and Swaroopa Adhyayana Kendra. Today, visually impaired students play the drums, keyboards and guitar, students of our Special Schools dance their heart out and children with no means have an opportunity to express themselves along with an alternative career path.
Beat2Beat is a great opportunity for people of Mangalore to join hands with Music for Change and make an impact. Anyone can associate with the NGO for the cause, and this event is the perfect platform to do your bit for society. Be there at Forum Fiza Mall to encourage the participating teams including Sudeep's and reach out to the organization via their website https://trustmusicforchange.org/
