Mangaluru: The Port Town Advanced Toastmasters Club, an advanced toastmasters club, an offshoot of the Toastmasters international organization, in the port town of Mangaluru, held its investiture ceremony for its office bearers for the year 2016 -17 (July to June) at Hotel BMS, Mangaluru on 30th June 2016. It was a grand ceremony followed by Dinner, built around the theme of 'Water' .
The Ceremony involved the presentation of the previous year's report by the outgoing secretary, Distinguished Toastmaster Matilda Pinto, the first DTM in the combined District of Sri Lanka and India (now split), the Installation of the new office bearers itself conducted by the Area Director, Sagnik Biswas after a humorous introduction of the outgoing and incoming office bearers by Dr. C. K. Balllal, renowned neuro surgeon of Mangalore, a farewell speech by the outgoing president of the Club, Dr. Molly Chaudhuri, and an acceptance speech by Brian Fernandes, the incoming president.
The Chief Guest, CA Giridhar Kamath, explained in detail about the limited and dwindling availability of water and the perils of the ill-advised projects like Varahi and Yettinahole. He sought the toastmasters help in delving deep into the need for these projects and also to put their speaking skills to good use to spread the message of water conservation once they were convinced about the need for it.
The Port town Advanced Toastmasters Club was chartered two years ago, and is among the more successful clubs in Mangaluru because, as its out going Vice President – Education, Dr. C. K Ballal said, it has stuck to its vision of enabling speakers to pursue higher levels of speaking skills. It draws its membership from among those who have completed their basic speaking manuals from across all the other nine clubs of Mangaluru, and is therefore a melting pot of excellence, he added.
Public Speaking originally started with the Ancient Greek Orators, and while society, culture and technology have evolved the process tremendously, the foundations of public speaking as a form of communication to a group of people remains intact. A good speaker can deliver a bad message well, and an advanced speaker can do it very well...while an average speaker can manage to remain unnoticed despite a great message. Naturally the purpose of chartering an advanced club was to create good speakers, but good speakers with good message, and in that the Port Town Advanced Toastmasters club, a community of self-driven highly motivated individuals with common goals, has done very well for itself.
The incoming president Brian Fernandes, highlighted the benefits that had accrued to its members in the two years of its existence. These included "stronger evaluations, specialty speeches such as Panel Discussions, Brainstorming sessions, Oratory speeches, and Roasting speeches with equivalence in evaluations, diversity in membership, that bring their parent clubs culture to the melting pot, a self-driven sense of purpose, where the drive for goal accomplishment is from within and there is no pressure but to improve, and most important of all higher and tougher standards".
He also indicated the challenges that the new team would face: "the rising cost of dual membership, which would impacts the induction of new members and retention of existing members, monitoring and persuading members to fulfill educational and leadership goals, and making club meetings interesting". There is also the challenge of attaining the required DCP points, and winning the various awards that the club is eligible for, he added

The function was compered by Toastmaster Sharmila Sagar and the stage programme was followed by a very delicious and sumptuous vegetarian dinner, hosted by Hotel BMS.
